During the weekend of 25-27th April 2008, Cadets from Walsall & Perry Barr Marine Cadet Detachments took part in the annual battle for the National Marine Cadet Drill Championship at HMS Raleigh, Plymouth under the scrutiny of the WO2 Thrift and his team.

A close competition ensued as the cadets representing 1 Troop - Alpha Company (South West Area) took on the might of cadets from X-Ray (Eastern Area), Yankee (Northern Area) and Zulu (Southern Area) Companies under the watchful eye of Sgt V Wagstaff and Sgt B Burlace.

The hard work and dedication from the Cadets over the last few months proved worthy as they walked away with trophies for Best Arena Display and Overall winners, making them 2008 National Marine Cadet Drill Champions.

This is an excellent achievement for all cadets and staff involved from both units. They will now be looking forward to the Annual Trafalgar day parade, London in October where they will be representing Marine Cadets Nationally.

Again the Marine Guard and Bugler took their positions and the rest of the unit stood back with a number of spectators looking on to. Normandy Trip

On Friday 20th October 38 people from TS Vanguard started their journey to Caen in Normandy, France. The Coach set off from Walsall HQ at 0715 to start the long journey down to Dover, accross to Calais and then onto our Hotel in Caen.

Saturday saw us visit the Merville Battery Site, located on the East bank of the mouth of the River Orne. Then onto Pegasus bridge to view the museum and the famous Cafe Gondree.
The Saturday afternoon took us to the D-Day museum in Arromanche then onto The British Commenwealth Wargraves in Bayeuax which holds 4868 graves. Here we paid tribute to our war heros by laying a wreath.

Sunday started off with a trip to Longues Sur Mer, again to see some German Batteries however this time they were coastal. We then made our way to Colleville American Cemetery which overlooks Omaha Beach. Again we paid tribute to our war heroes and laid a wreath. Colleville holds 9386 graves.
On the Sunday Afternoon we went to Ste Mere Eglise to visit the Airborne Museum then finally followed by a trip to Pointe du Hoc.

Our last full day on Monday saw us have fun and a more relaxed time as we travelled to Paris. Here we spent the day in Disneyland, I think some of the adults enjoyed it more than the Cadets!!

In all the trip was very enjoyable and everyone enjoyed many different aspects of it. Hopefully we shall be arranging another one for next year, possibly in Germany.

Please keep an eye out in the Picture Gallery for photos of our trip.

Downsman Hike

On Friday 6th October 2 Staff and 6 Cadets made their way to Burgess Hill, Sussex to begin a weekend of Communications for the Downsman Hike.

The Downsman Hike is an 80 mile walk over the South Downs Way which is organised every year by the Scout and Guide Associations of East and West Sussex starting from Buriton going through to Eastbourne.

The Sea Cadets are asked to supply a Communications team to work along side the 1st Burgess Hill Scout Group. Throughout the weekend they provide an extremely important job by acting as Check Point Stewards for the teams taking part. Their job is to relay the times and details for each team passing through their Check Point back to HQ.

The Cadets did very well, as some of them were out until the early hours of the Sunday Morning.

SEPTEMBER 2006

Sponsored Gun Haul

In order to raise funds for their unit, TS Vanguard, the members of Walsall Sea Cadets recently held a sponsored gun haul on Cannock Chase. The Cadets, aged between 10 and 18, pulled a replica field gun and limber around a circuitous route between Milford Common and Castle Ring

Saturday morning was a fine clear day and the older Cadets soon warmed to the task of hauling the 500kg outfit up Spring Hill having left the common behind them. Their route then eased as they went around Brocton Coppice before they started to climb again to the Glacier Boulder. Here they were able to enjoy some refreshments as they handed the gun over to the second group of Cadets.

Working in relays the teams of Cadets hauled the gun and limber along the stony tracks of Cannock Chase Country Park taking the hills and descents in their stride. The swollen stream across their path was just another obstacle, which they were able to enjoy fording on the way to the end of Saturday’s section of the route.

The start of the second day was delayed, not through lack of enthusiasm, but due to the weather. A severe thunderstorm and the accompanying heavy rain kept the Cadets at the unit until late morning. As the rain eased the teams were ferried back to the start of the second day’s haul. By the time they were ready to start the sun had come out and the rain had been forgotten.

The lost time was quickly made up as the teams set to with a will to complete the second day. More than once the gun was waiting at the change over point as the vehicle bringing the fresh team had to take the longer route around the public roads. The second day was completed without incident as the gun was brought into the car park at Castle Ring where a late lunch was taken before returning to the unit.

We would like to thank everyone for their support for this event especially the adults who prepared the food and drink or accompanied the Cadets on the route, Staffordshire County Council and Cannock Chase Rangers for allowing this event to take place and most of all to everyone who sponsored us.

Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th July saw 2 of our Cadets, L/C Collier and A/C McMulkin travel down to SCTC Weymouth with PO Hughes to compete in this years Area Sailing Competition.

Well done to both of you, maybe next year we'll have more sailors and get into the top ten.

539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines Visit

On Monday 17th July L/Cpl A Bellingham of Walsall MCD made his way to Plymouth, home of 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines, to partake in a weeks Work Experience. This is his story:

I arrived at the Guard room at 9:30 and was greeted by Leading Marine Engineering Mechanic A. Ross and WO2 T. Ross. I was later greeted by the M.E.O (Marine Engineering Officer) Lt A. Lievers. My first task of the week was to give a general service to the engine of a Mk 1 Rigid Raider. This consisted of changing the oil, fuel, air filters and water strainer. This took up most of my first day.

On Tuesday, my main task was to remove the Intermediate unit. This is the section of the prop shaft that is attached to the aft part of the Raider. After lunch we then continued to fix the propeller and its wiring through the aft part of the Raider to inside the engine compartment.

Wednesday saw me take a trip to RM Instow, where my uncle Chief Petty Officer Bellingham had been repairing a hovercraft. Mac, who I was paired up with, and I were working on a hovercraft which had been over heating and we needed to work out what the problem was. We realized that it was the air filters as these were covered in sand and muck and needed to be replaced.
Before lunch I was offered an opportunity to go in the dip tank (a 1.5m deep tank where amphibious vehicles are tested). Once I was kitted out I sat in the land rover and we drove down the slope into the water. I was surprised at how the rear of the vehicle stayed afloat until the door was opened and the water rushed in.

Thursday morning we put the engine back in the Raider and connected up all the electronics and pipes then gave the engine a test run. We then stripped the parts off an old engine that had caught fire and replaced them. After lunch there wasn’t much to do so we tidied the boat shed and completed my school forms and other paperwork for the burnt out engine.

Friday morning was PT which consisted of a 6 mile run which I successfully completed. I was very proud of this. After we had cleaned up I received compliments and thanks from Alex for helping him during the week. We also had a good chat about my career options. The M.E.O also came to say goodbye and thanked me for a great week. I found it quite miserable to leave, it was such a good week.

I would like to thank Alex Ross for an amazing week and good luck to him on his forthcoming Petty Officers Board and WO2 T. Ross for my lifts into work and everyone else that made this week possible.
